While the chef filled the house with aromas that made their mouths water, Austin checked the time every few minutes.

He leaned against the doorframe listening as Mom, Victoria, and Zoe discussed possible venues. With such a short timeline, availability would be a factor, and they needed to find one soon. But with his mom just home from the hospital, she couldn’t exactly tour places, and she needed someone with her.

“I can stay a few more days. I’m sure Burt would be fine with that.” Victoria pulled out her phone, presumably to get approval after-the-fact for what she’d just offered.

“Go home. I’m fine.” Mom never wanted to inconvenience anyone.

Austin needed to find a way to make everyone happy. Vic was tired and no doubt ready to go home to her family. Mom needed help but wasn’t going to admit it.

“What if I hired someone to be here and help you, Mom? Vic, we can get you on a charter home in the morning. Tomorrow, Zoe and I can tour venues and choose a place.” He ran for the door when the bell rang.

A woman with dark unruly curls peeked around a massive bouquet. “I’m Gemma. These are for your mom.” Gemma handed the crystal vase to Austin. “Be right back with the tea roses.”

He set the arrangement on the entry table and stepped out onto the porch. “Thanks for doing all this.”

“Are you kidding? This is the best job I’ve had in a while. It beats buying school supplies and backpacks.”

“Oh! You found the tea roses. They’re perfect.” He imagined Zoe’s reaction.

“Here are the question cards. I added a few blank ones in case you wanted to add any, and I had some stationary printed so that you can write a note with each gift if you want.”

He ran his finger across the printed card that had Zoe’s name printed, the o replaced with a heart. The flip side said Because . . .

His mind raced, figuring out what he wanted to write. “These are great.”

Gemma waved as she ran back down the steps. “Talk to you soon.”

Austin tucked the little rose bush in the corner of the porch and walked back inside. “Mom, these are for you.”

“Austin, they’re beautiful!” Mom beamed.

Victoria stretched as she stood. “Very pretty, and I like your plan.”

He glanced at Zoe, who nodded.

“Great. It sounds like dinner’s ready.” He reached out to help his mom off the couch.

She clung to his arm as they strolled to the dining room. “What about work?”

“That’s what night time is for.” Austin laughed, more serious than he wanted to let on.
